Our engineering efforts are supervised by a licensed Professional Engineer in responsible charge. Black Laboratories has active collaborations with universities with laboratories located at the Applied Research Center, and user access to laboratory facilities at Jefferson Lab, and at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (National Science Foundation facility) at Florida State University. We have a Space Act Agreement which allows us fee-based access to analytical, testing and processing equipment at the NASA Langley Research Center. Additional user agreements have been held at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and we have consulted for Fermilab (Batavia, IL), NASA Langley, and Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY, in Hamburg, Germany), and several commercial entities.

Current ongoing research activities utilizing the following analytical methods:

  • Optical, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopies
  • High Resolution Electron Microscopy
  • Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Profilometry and Atomic Force Microscopy
  • Electron Backscattered Diffraction
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry
  • Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy
  • Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
  • Hardness and Microhardness
  • Mechanical Testing: Tensile, Creep, Fatigue and Fracture Toughness
  • Galvanostatic and Potentiostatic Measurements for Electrochemistry
  • X-ray Diffraction
